Having used the ring stolen from Alberich to reward the giants for building Valhalla for him, Wotan begins scheming to get it back. For if it were ever to fall into Alberich’s hands again, the gods’ fate would be sealed. As the father of the gods, Wotan himself may not break contracts, which is where his children Siegmund and Sieglinde come in…
This new production by Russian director Dmitri Tcherniakov at the Staatsoper Berlin has won great acclaim in the media. Tcherniakov has modernized the material, setting the action in a 1970s-style research institute, while retaining the poetic subtext of myth. The result is a once-in-a-lifetime musical tour de force that has garnered rave reviews for its excellent singers, the Staatskapelle Berlin, and by no means least Christian Thielemann.
The complete Ring cycle will be available for replay at Arte Concert as of 19 November. Not only is this what Richard Wagner himself would have wanted, but it also accords with Tcherniakov’s understanding of the tetralogy as an inseparable whole.
