On 4th December the Board of Directors of the Fondazione Teatro Donizetti unanimously appointed Riccardo Frizza as the new Artistic Director of the Donizetti Opera.

This appointment marks a continuation of the Festival’s ongoing success and stability, as Frizza has also served as its Music Director for the past eight years.

„It is an extraordinary recognition of the work I have been doing since 2017 as music director of the festival dedicated to Donizetti – says Maestro Frizza – and I am deeply grateful to all the members of the board, chaired by Giorgio Berta. This double responsibility is not only a great honour, but also a clear path to follow, with the determined will to preserve the history and success of the Festival, without losing sight of the origins of the historical, musical and cultural heritage embodied in the great, beloved and immortal name of Gaetano Donizetti.

Those who, like me, have known and studied his scores all their lives are aware of the need to transform this authentic „musical reservoir” into artistic projects worthy of the stature of such a treasure, to increase international awareness of Donizetti, to support and promote the Fondazione’s research centre, and to envisage a festival that will involve both the people of Bergamo and a worldwide audience. I will soon present my project.

Now is the time to reflect on all that the Donizetti Opera has been in the first ten years of its existence, and on the irrepressible contribution of Francesco Micheli, who has left the bold mark of his creativity. Immediately after that, it will be time to make big plans and take action, so that new, exciting ideas can take shape. I am sure that I can count on the continued support of all those who have accompanied me over the years in my work as Music Director. „
