The Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart will present the Internationales Bachfest Stuttgart for the first time from March 9 to 23, 2025, under the motto Bach and Latin America.

The festival builds on the success of last autumn’s South America tour. At its core is, of course, the work of Johann Sebastian Bach, juxtaposed with compositions by Latin American composers such as Gaspar Fernández. The festival combines top-tier concerts with a young artists’ academy for early music. Renowned artists such as Dorothee Oberlinger, Alexander Melnikov, Jos van Veldhoven, Rubén Dubrovsky, Sarah Willis with the Havana Lyceum Orchestra, as well as the Bach Consort Wien and the Ballet Folclórico del Perú, will be featured. The Bachakademie ensembles, Gaechinger Cantorey and JSB Ensemble, will perform several concerts under the direction of academy leader Hans-Christoph Rademann. The festival is under the patronage of Minister President Winfried Kretschmann and Mayor Dr. Frank Nopper.

The Internationales Bachfest 2025 explores Latin America’s rich musical history from colonial times to the present. Highlights include the “Fiesta Peruana” with the ensemble Los Temperamentos (March 16), a concert by the Bach Consort Wien featuring Villancicos and madrigals (March 13), La Grande Chapelle from Spain performing baroque sacred music from Central America (March 20), and “Mozart y Mambo” with Sarah Willis and the Havana Lyceum Orchestra (March 22). Concerts with historical instruments and intercultural projects will highlight the close connection between early music and Latin American traditions.

The young artists’ academy offers emerging musicians from around the world the opportunity to work with renowned instructors and actively shape the festival. Highlights include performances by the JSB Ensemble, featuring cantatas by J.S. Bach alongside Latin American works (March 14, 15, and 18). The festival program spans oratorios, chamber music, dance, matinees, late-night concerts, and film screenings. Institutions such as the Hochschule für Musik, the Linden Museum, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, and the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra will contribute with diverse events.

A special event will be Johann Sebastian Bach’s birthday celebration on the European Day of Early Music, March 21, at Wizemann, featuring concerts, tango, and live music. The festival will also host discussion panels with experts, providing insights into musical and cultural-historical contexts. The Internationales Bachfest Stuttgart 2025 promises a unique musical experience with an international flair and a rich exchange between European and Latin American musical traditions.

The large-scale cantata project VISION.BACH – mit Bach das Leben begreifen results in a ten-part CD edition released by Hänssler Classics. The latest volume, “The First Cantata Year” Vol. 6, was recently published, with Vol. 7 set for release in June 2025. Starting in the 2025/26 season, Hans-Christoph Rademann and the Gaechinger Cantorey will continue the project with the third cantata cycle (1725–1727) from J.S. Bach’s Leipzig years. More information on this topic will follow soon.

The Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart, together with its ensemble, Gaechinger Cantorey, keeps the musical heritage of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries alive. Hans-Christoph Rademann has led the Bachakademie since 2013, following its founding by Helmuth Rilling in 1981. In 2016, he transformed Gaechinger Cantorey into a leading original sound ensemble, both nationally and internationally. With a diverse range of concert formats, innovative music education, and a digital offering that includes podcasts and concert streams, the Internationale Bachakademie is a major cultural and social force in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, and beyond. The Bachakademie is supported by the state of Baden-Württemberg, the state capital Stuttgart, as well as numerous sponsors, patrons, and private donors.
