Gewandhaus Radio is the only classical music station in the world dedicated to the music making in one exceptional concert hall and of one exceptional orchestra: the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig and its Gewandhausorchester. It will broadcast a hand-picked, largely presented classical music stream around the clock, drawing on the diversity of repertoire, eras, genres, and performers from 100 years of classical recording history.
Gewandhaus Radio is licensed to and operated by the charitable foundation Zukunft Gewandhaus zu Leipzig Projekte gGmbH. The Foundation is delighted to have been able to recruit the experienced radio producer, ICMA Jury Member Martin Hoffmeister as Executive Editor.
“Gewandhaus Radio is one piece of the mosaic both for fostering the bond with our existing audience and for attracting new ones. The exploitation of this popular medium is one of the ways in which the Foundation can support the Gewandhaus in propagating its brand, musical content, and artistic excellence beyond the concert hall,’ says Steffen Hildebrand, describing the Foundation’s commitment to this unique project.
The unique features of Gewandhaus Radio are the regular, focussed reporting on the diverse activities and ventures of the Gewandhausorchester and the Gewandhaus, the broadcasting of both live and recorded concerts of the Gewandhausorchester and other Gewandhaus ensembles (for instance the chamber music ensembles, the organ and the choirs), which will, apart from in the Gewandhaus itself, be heard exclusively on Gewandhaus Radio.
In addition, the station’s correspondents report on the celebrated musical life of the city of Leipzig, the concert tours of the Gewandhausorchester and the world of classical music in general.
“Gewandhaus Radio is a true milestone that leads the tradition of our institution into the digital future and anchors the identity of the Orchestra in the hearts and minds of listeners far beyond the concert hall” says Gewandhaus General Director Andreas Schulz, regarding the scale of the project.
Gewandhaus Radio creates human encounters with classical music in a very simple way. Listeners not only find music they already know exists, and not only the (usually very limited) range of music suggested by the algorithm of a streaming platform. Gewandhaus Radio programmes contain revelations, are a journey of discovery, offer the opportunity to experience diversity and to engage with differing interpretations of musical masterpieces. In contrast to the majority of classical internet radio providers, Gewandhaus Radio offers mostly presented programmes, enabling listeners to stay well informed about the composers, the works and the performers.
The Naxos Music Library, the world’s largest online database for classical music, has been enlisted as partner for the provision of the audio files to be broadcast.
“We will be broadcasting exclusively classical music. The musical profile of the Gewandhausorchester, along with the curated selection of music from the accumulated repertoire of 600 years of musical creation and 100 years of recording history will ensure the tonal and stylistic variance of the programmes” says Martin Hoffmeister, explaining the future approach to the station’s content.
The technical production of the new station is implemented by BEBE Medien GmbH Leipzig. The external appearance and website lie in the hands of the creative and digital agency TNC Production. The Leipzig-based technology company Audalaxy is providing the infrastructure for the distribution of the stream, audio content and dashboards for real-time data analysis.
