Babra, who has revived the thousand-faced musical traditions of the Slavic peoples and the Balkans, has this time collaborated with the Polish formation Megitza to produce a new album entitled RAZEM, which is to be released on 31 January by FolkEurópa, distributed by Hangvető.
RAZEM is a true love project, fuelled by the striking similarities between Babra (HU) and Megitza (PL), and also the inspiring differences between their music. They approach authentic material in a different way, they start from a different place, and we may only know where they arrive after listening to the album. Both bands have a standout female bassist-singer, they are young and keep the tradition up to date, but their playing together creates something completely new.
The album RAZEM is not simply a Hungarian-Polish project: the traditional attitude of Babra and the more popish, unique sound of Megitza is a mixture of several genres and artistic attitudes—with the greatest possible naturalness. Folk songs, sung in both Hungarian and Polish, mix, effortlessly drawing out the community of traditions. This is where the ambition of the two groups meets: to show the role of folk tradition as a basic unit, a common treasure, a force of identity.
