Internationally acclaimed Hungarian director, Béla Tarr will hold a masterclass at Freeszfe from 9 to 23 January. The official language of the masterclass is English.
Béla Tarr’s views on filmmaking:
“In general I’d say the following for an up-and-coming filmmaker: you shouldn’t learn filmmaking, but life. If you understand life, the cinematic style will find you, and you’ll feel how you have to make movies. With every question asked, you are making a style, therefore another question emerges and you’ll have to answer slightly differently then. You build your own language step by step, provided you are a real filmmaker. And you don’t need a degree, nobody has ever asked me about my degree. I think it’s stupid to call someone an actor, a director – in other words a professional – just because they have a degree.
If a cinematographer believes that a brand-new, fancy camera will make them a good cinematographer, then they are completely wrong. You can make a very good movie with a basic iPhone. What matters is the energy, the anger and the bravery in you, and to not give a shit. In the 21st century, when you can make a film with a cellphone, it is useless to learn the rules, as the rules don’t apply to you.”
We welcome applications from aspiring directors and cinematographers from all over the world to participate in a joint creative process under the mentorship of Béla Tarr.
