Director Krzysztof Warlikowski and conductor Pierre Dumoussaud revisit Hamlet, Ambroise Thomas’ romantic masterpiece, on the stage of the Opéra Bastille. Featuring Ludovic Tézier in the title role. Stream starts on 30 March, 7.30 pm.
Hamlet is undeniably one of William Shakespeare’s most famous works. Peopled by ghosts and characters assailed by their own tormented psyches and tragic loves, the play found a particular resonance with the Romantics of the 19th century.
Indeed, the plight of the Prince of Denmark inspired Alexandre Dumas père to revisit the play in the French style – a reworking that was in turn adapted by librettists Michel Carré and Jules Barbier. This libretto inspired Ambroise Thomas to pen an impassioned opera demonstrating his vocal and orchestral writing mastery. It is one of his finest scores, in the tradition of grand opera à la française.
Pierre Dumoussaud and Krzysztof Warlikowski have transposed Ambroise Thomas’ masterpiece to the stage of the Paris Opera. Ludovic Tézier sings the sublime baritone role of Hamlet, supported by Jean Teitgen (Claudius), Eve-Maud Hubeaux (Gertrude) and Lisette Oropesa (Ophelia). The voices of these exceptional singers find their perfect vocal and musical partners in the Chorus and Orchestra of the Paris National Opera.
Opera filmed on 30 March 2023 at the Opéra Bastille, Paris.
