The Várfok Gallery is deeply saddened by the passing of its beloved artist, Françoise Gilot who died on 6th. June, 2023 in Manhattan at the age of 101.
The Várfok Gallery had a personal relationship with Françoise Gilot and has represented her in the region since 2000. Over the years, the Gallery has organised numerous solo exhibitions of Gilot’s unparalleled lifework and has witnessed first-hand how, over the decades, her work has gradually taken its rightful place, shedding the label „Picasso’s muse”. Her 100th birthday was marked by a series of celebrations around the world, including a major solo exhibition at the Musée Estrine in France, the Várfok Gallery in Budapest, conferences in Paris and New York, and an exhibition and auction at Christie’s in Hong Kong, where a work sold for over a million euros, repeating her earlier success in London.
Françoise Gilot was a bridge between modern and contemporary art, between Hungary and the world. Her legacy, both human and artistic, is incomparably rich and undeniable.
Preparations for her exhibition at the Kunsthalle Budapest, which opens in December, 2023, have been underway for a year. The Várfok Gallery was delighted to share the news of the exhibition with her a few months ago, which she received with great enthusiasm and joy.
We are profoundly grateful to have been given the opportunity to represent and work together with such an extraordinary woman and artist.
Farewell, Françoise!
