An instrument-making workshop and a showroom, as well as apartments suitable for receiving guest artists, were also located in the Auer House in Veszprém, which was completely renovated in the framework of the European Capital of Culture 2023 programme.
Lipót Auer, the world-famous violinist, music teacher, conductor and composer, spent his childhood in the house at 1 Thököly Imre Street in Veszprém. The building was privately owned for a long time, then the municipality bought the building and the long-awaited renovation could begin in November 2022. The complete renovation of the protected historic building was part of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture programme.
Lipót Auer was born in Veszprém in 1845. As a child, he studied with the first violinist of the Veszprém Cathedral, then moved to Pest and later to Vienna. As a violinist and conductor, he has enjoyed great success not only in Europe but also in the United States. At the height of his career, countries and rulers vied to hear him play. As the most famous violin teacher of his time, and the founder of the Russian violin school, more than 300 excellent violinists have graduated from his school in Russia alone.
With the recent completion of the renovation work, two residential units have been created on the first floor and a third in the attic. The rear extension of the building will house an instrument-making workshop and a showroom, which will also be used for future exhibitions. The visual workshop of master luthier Elemér Sümegi was already in Veszprém, but from now on visitors will be welcomed in the Auer House instead of the Castle. As in the Italian workshops that open onto the street, you can also get a glimpse of how musical instruments are repaired and made.
The property is run by the House of Arts Veszprém, so they will be able to provide accommodation for artists and exhibitors invited to Veszprém. The first occupants of the renovated building are the artists of the Japanese ceramics exhibition The Roads of the Earth, which opened on Friday 5 August.
