From the 2024/25 season, young conductor Levente Török (31) will take over the artistic direction of the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra, Hungary.
The members of the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra have voted with an unprecedented majority of confidence in young conductor Levente Török, who the ensemble hopes will bring new impetus and youthful freshness to the orchestra’s life.
The artistic director of the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra between 2018 and 2023 was Mátyás Antal, who previously worked with the orchestra as assistant conductor between 1974 and 1979. Mátyás Antal has invited Levente Török to join the orchestra as guest conductor on several occasions in the past, and in response to our questions he said that he welcomes the majority vote of the orchestra’s members and is confident that Levente Török will truly start a new chapter in the life of the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra. Mátyás Antal will assist Levente Török as honorary artistic director until the end of the season.
Levente Török was born in 1993 into a family of musicians. While graduating from the Vienna Academy of Music, he had the opportunity to work at the prestigious Vienna Opera, as well as held the position of assistant conductor at world-famous music festivals such as the Baden-Baden Festival (with Sir Simon Rattle) or the Wels Wagner Festival in Austria (with Ralf Weikert).
His career as a conductor began in Germany, where he was first conducting tutor at the Regensburg Theatre, then principal conductor of the Ulm Theatre and the Mecklenburg State Theatre.
In 2021, he won the International Conducting Competition ‘Llíria, City of Music’, thanks to which, for example, he will perform Bartók’s Concerto with the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra this year.
Despite his young age, he has conducted in many venues, including Venice in 2019 and the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik in 2023.
He has conducted most symphony orchestras in Hungary. He is also a regular guest at the Hungarian State Opera House, his most notable production to date being Tosca, which premiered in December 2023.
Levente Török takes over the duties from Honorary Artistic Director Mátyás Antal.
